Whether you prefer a gas powered grill or charcoal, it is important for you to follow safety measures to keep you, your family, home, guests and neighbors safe!
- Place your grill away from any deck railings, away from any awnings or tree branches.
- NEVER leave your grill unattended.
- Be sure you are keeping your grill clean. According to the NFPA, 1 out of every 5 grill fires, the grill was not clean.
- Be sure children know that anywhere near a grill, open flame, or anywhere food is prepared should be a "kid free zone"
- Never use a grill in a garage, under a tent, in a shed or anywhere else enclosed. It could cause carbon monoxide build up.
Gas grills
- Before firing up your gas grill, check the hose for any leaks. You can apply a solution of water and soap on the hose to see if there are any leaks (it will show bubbles)
- If you smell gas while grilling, immediately step away from the grill. Do NOT move the grill on your own. Contact your local fire department if a fire occurs.
- Never start your grill with the lid closed. This could cause the gas to build up and combust when lit.
Charcoal grills
- Charcoal grills can stay hot for hours after you extinguish the flames. Be sure you aren't putting any flammable materials near the grill while it may still be hot. Ensure nothing can be blown into or near the charcoal grill.
- Be sure there are no holes or rust damage to the bottom or sides of the grill. Hot coals can fall out and cause a fire or injury.
- Use proper starter fluid. Do not use lighter fluid or another kind that is not meant for charcoal grills.
- If your flames are too low, try re-ignighting with dry kindling or more charcoal. Avoid using any more fire starting liquid. This could cause serious injury and fire.

Testing Smoke Alarms and Changing Batteries-Warwick
Have you tested your smoke alarms yet this month? Now’s the time if you haven’t already!
You should test your smoke alarms at least once a month, and batteries should be replaced at least once a year.
A good way to remind yourself to change the fire alarm batteries is to change them when you change your clocks for daylight savings time.
There are two common types of smoke detectors found in homes:
Battery- powered: monthly testing is crucial with these kinds of detectors. They are susceptible to worn out batteries.
Hardwired: These are powered by your homes electrical system. But they will usually have back-up batteries just in case of an outage. These type of detectors still need to be tested monthly to be sure they are functional.
When you’re testing your detectors:
Be sure everyone is aware
Have a family member stand at the furthest point away from the alarm. This is to ensure it can be heard from any point in the home.
Press and hold the test button, it may take a few seconds to kick on, but a very loud chirping sound will emit once it’s engaged.
Signs you need to replace the batteries: a high pitched chirping noise will be coming from your alarm if the batteries need to be replaced. It’s best to be proactive and change the batteries before they get to this point. If the batteries are no longer good, they wont be able to do their job.

Oily soils are removed in different ways. Some oily soils are light enough to be emulsified in water-based detergents. Other oily soils may be too heavy for detergents to be effective in removing them. These heavier soils can be dissolved with oil-based solvents.
Emulsifying Oily Soils with Detergents
Can we put something into water to help us clean oily soils? Yes - detergents! Water-based detergents are able to dissolve in water, but they are also able to attach to oily soils. Detergents pull the oily soils away from the surface, so we can extract the soils with the detergent.
Detergent molecules are made so that they have a water-loving head and an oil-loving tail.
The makeup of the tail of a detergent molecule is similar to the makeup of oil, gasoline, grease, and animal fats. The detergent's tail will dissolve substances similar to grease and oil. The head of the detergent molecule breaks oily soils apart and the head pulls them into the water, creating an emulsion. An emulsion means that the detergent acts as a connecting link between oil and water molecules, allowing them to be mixed evenly through the cleaning solution. The cleaning solution can then be rinsed out along with the emulsified soils.
Detergents have some drawbacks. If they are not rinsed thoroughly, they leave a sticky residue. Also, when detergents combine with hard water (water that contains minerals, such as calcium or magnesium), they make a salt. These salts will not dissolve in water, so they slow down the cleaning action of the detergent and form a scum.

Why is that smokey smell so hard to remove?
Smoke odor particles are tiny - in some cases even microscopic in size. They are measured in microns and range in size from .1 (one tenth) of a micron to about 4 microns. Compare a tiny odor particle to a period created by a typewriter (about 150 microns) or to the tip of a human hair (about 75 to 100 microns).
The small size of odor particles allows them to penetrate surfaces easily. Other factors besides size can help smoke odors penetrate materials:
Surface Porosity - the more porous a material, the more likely it is to absorb odors.
Heavy Concentrations of Residue - the more concentrated the residue, the greater the surface area of materials it can impact.
High Exposure Time - the longer a surface is exposed to odor particles, the greater the number of odor particles that will penetrate.
Heat - heat causes porous surfaces to expand, allowing odors to penetrate even deeper. When heat is removed, the surfaces contract and trap the odor particles.

Emergency services are needed, such as boarding up the structure, establishing a source of electricity, winterizing the building in cold weather, and removing smoke-filled and charred debris. Restoration will involve extensive cleaning of the structure and probably require restorers to pack and move out all salvageable contents for off-site cleaning. Multiple methods of deodorization are needed to remove smoke odors.

National Weather Service Storm Lighting Myths & Facts
Myth: If you're caught outside during a thunderstorm, you should crouch down to reduce your risk of being struck.
Fact: Crouching doesn't make you any safer outdoors. Run to a substantial building or hard topped vehicle. If you are too far to run to one of these options, you have no good alternative. You are NOT safe anywhere outdoors. See our safety page for tips that may slightly reduce your risk.
Myth: Lightning never strikes the same place twice.
Fact: Lightning often strikes the same place repeatedly, especially if it’s a tall, pointy, isolated object. The Empire State Building is hit nearly 100 times a year.
Myth: If it’s not raining or there aren’t clouds overhead, you’re safe from lightning.
Fact: Lightning often strikes more than three miles from the center of the thunderstorm, far outside the rain or thunderstorm cloud. “Bolts from the blue” can strike 10-15 miles from the thunderstorm.
Myth: Rubber tires on a car protect you from lightning by insulating you from the ground.
Fact: Most cars are safe from lightning, but it is the metal roof and metal sides that protect you, NOT the rubber tires. Remember, convertibles, motorcycles, bicycles, open-shelled outdoor recreational vehicles and cars with fiberglass shells offer no protection from lightning. When lightning strikes a vehicle, it goes through the metal frame into the ground. Don't lean on doors during a thunderstorm.
Myth: A lightning victim is electrified. If you touch them, you’ll be electrocuted.
Fact: The human body does not store electricity. It is perfectly safe to touch a lightning victim to give them first aid. This is the most chilling of lightning Myths. Imagine if someone died because people were afraid to give CPR!
Myth: If outside in a thunderstorm, you should seek shelter under a tree to stay dry.
Fact: Being underneath a tree is the second leading cause of lightning casualties. Better to get wet than fried!
Myth: If you are in a house, you are 100% safe from lightning.
Fact: A house is a safe place to be during a thunderstorm as long as you avoid anything that conducts electricity. This means staying off corded phones, electrical appliances, wires, TV cables, computers, plumbing, metal doors and windows. Windows are hazardous for two reasons: wind generated during a thunderstorm can blow objects into the window, breaking it and causing glass to shatter and second, in older homes, in rare instances, lightning can come in cracks in the sides of windows.
Myth: If thunderstorms threaten while you are outside playing a game, it is okay to finish it before seeking shelter.
Fact: Many lightning casualties occur because people do not seek shelter soon enough. No game is worth death or life-long injuries. Seek proper shelter immediately if you hear thunder. Adults are responsible for the safety of children.
Myth: Structures with metal, or metal on the body (jewelry, cell phones,Mp3 players, watches, etc), attract lightning.
Fact: Height, pointy shape, and isolation are the dominant factors controlling where a lightning bolt will strike. The presence of metal makes absolutely no difference on where lightning strikes. Mountains are made of stone but get struck by lightning many times a year. When lightning threatens, take proper protective action immediately by seeking a safe shelter – don’t waste time removing metal. While metal does not attract lightning, it does conduct it so stay away from metal fences, railing, bleachers, etc.
Myth: If trapped outside and lightning is about to strike, I should lie flat on the ground.
Fact: Lying flat increases your chance of being affected by potentially deadly ground current. If you are caught outside in a thunderstorm, you keep moving toward a safe shelter.
Myth: lightning flashes are 3-4 km apart.
Fact: Old data said successive flashes were on the order of 3-4 km apart. New data shows half the flashes are about 9 km apart. The National Severe Storms Laboratory report concludes: "It appears the safety rules need to be modified to increase the distance from a previous flash which can be considered to be relatively safe, to at least 10 to 13 km (6 to 8 miles). In the past, 3 to 5 km (2-3 miles) was as used in lightning safety education."
