8 Great Preparation Tips Before a Storm or Hurricane in Rhode Island

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail - Benjamin Franklin

Storm damage in Rhode Island can be very destructive and stressful for all who are involved. New England has had many storms in the past, so it’s important to be prepared at all times. Like Benjamin Franklin famously said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” This is especially true for storms, hurricanes, personal safety, and home security. You cannot wait until something bad happens to  be proactive. Take the following steps to prepare for when that tropical storm in Narragansett arrives or when that power outage strikes Smithfield.

  1. Have a home safety kit consisting of flashlights, candles, can openers, portable chargers, first-aid bandages, towels, and batteries. These will undoubtedly come in handy if the power is out for a substantial amount of time.
  2. Have a radio – In the case of a power outage, it would be smart of have a radio to still know about what’s going on since you cannot watch television
  3. Prior to the storm, make sure you have non-perishable food items like Ramen noodles, Canned vegetables, Canned soups, crackers and cereal to eat
  4. Store your medications in a safe place. Sometimes medication also has to be refrigerated, so it is a good idea to keep your fridges closed to prevent the cool air from escaping. Have a cooler or a safe backup place to store your important medications.
  5. Keep your mobile electronic devises sufficiently charged before the storm hits. After all, phones lose their battery life so fast and your phone will probably come in handy or at least save you from the "No WiFi boredom"!
  6. Make sure you have a portable charger to charge your devices during a power outage.
  7. Have multiple cases of water accessible, because the water supply may be contaminated
  8. IMPORTANT – be aware of where you’re walking especially if you’re going outside. So many deaths occur from electrical shock during a storm, so be careful you’re not stepping on any wet power lines. Stay indoors if you can do avoid getting injured.
