Flooded Woonsocket basement? This is what you should do

4/20/2020 (Permalink)

Going down the stairs to find that your basement now looks like an in-ground pool is something you don't want to see. Having water intrude into your basement can damage appliances, carpet, floors, and even heirlooms. You might not know where to even start... but that's what we're here for! If you do encounter flooding, contact a professional water damage restoration company right away!

What to do when your basement floods

Throw on some rain boots / protective gear: Don't walk into the water in your loafers or slippers, the water could be contaminated depending on the source. You won't want to ruin your good shoes walking into that. If the water is way high, you might want to break out those waders.

Find the source of the water: If the water is from a burst pipe, hot water heater, sewage backup, or other appliance failure, immediately shut off the water!

Check your sump pump or drain (if you have them): Both of these things can help drain any water from the basement after flooding, but they have to be in working condition. If they're clogged, try to get that clog out so they can begin doing their job!

-  Remove any valuables: Remove any important documents, family heirlooms, electronics (if safe to do so) and bring them into a safer area.

If the amount of water is minimal, you can use a wet/dry vacuum, mop, and a bucket.

If there's more than an inch or two, call (401) 949-9955, SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island is highly trained in water damage restoration. We regularly monitor and document throughout the extraction and drying process!
