Hurricane Isaias | Will it make it to Providence Rhode Island?
Whether or not we do get impacted by Hurricane Isaias, it's a good time to prepare an emergency kit, or go through yours to be sure nothing is spoiled, and ensure all batteries work!
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), The best time to prepare for a hurricane is before hurricane season begins which is June 1. But if you haven't already, you can always do it now!

Although we may not experience hurricanes like our southern coastal states do, we typically see the remnants of them.

Hurricane Isaias
Hurricane Isaias became the second Atlantic hurricane of 2020 on the night of July 30th. It has already arrived in Puerto Rico and is on it's way to Florida and the East Coast, expected to reach us mid-week next week.
Winds up to 45 mph are expected along the Florida coast, as well as dangerous rip currents in the ocean, and heavy rainfall.
As Isaias heads north to the Carolina's, it is expected to remain a hurricane. It's hard to determine now how strong the storm will still be by next week, this depends on the track it follows. It's not yet definitely determined if Hurricane Isaias will make it's way to Rhode Island, but it's a possibility, so it's best for you to prepare now just in case we get heavy rains and strong winds.

You can be struck while indoors, but it is rare. It can be caused by using wired electrical devices or plumbing (showers or baths)

This is issued when flash flooding is happening or is likely to happen soon. Warnings are usually more concentrated on specific areas due to excessive rain.

On Tuesday, January 28th, 2020, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit just 80 miles from Jamaica. The affects were felt as far as Miami and Cuba. This quake came just three weeks after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Puerto Rico. In New England, we don't have to worry about earthquakes as much as California or Japan. But, we have experienced a fair share of them.
An earthquake is what happens when 2 pieces of the Earth slip past each other. Sometimes foreshocks occur. These are little earthquakes that happen in the same place the larger one will occur. Kind of like a warning sign.
Although there are foreshocks that come before a quake, there is no way for scientists to predict an earthquake.
Earthquake magnitudes are recorded with seismographs. There is a heavy free hanging weight and is set in the ground. When the earth shakes due to a quake, the seismograph will too, but the weight does not, which will create the graph that determines the magnitude (siesmogram).

Tropical Storm Gabriel & Hurricane Dorian Aftermath - Smithfield, RI
September is hurricane season, and we first say it with Hurricane Dorian as our headliner. Hurricane Dorian made wave in the Bahamas, killing and injuring so many people and animals. The Hurricane was a category 3 hurricane but grew. The National Hurricane Center is also monitoring Hurricane Gabriel, which is said to not be a threat to us or the Atlantic ocean. Hurricane Gabriel is forming in the north-central Atlantic. Meteorologist say it should transition to a smaller, less severe size by this week. There is no threat to the east coast. An area in the Atlantic ocean is experiencing showers and abnormal weather patterns, so this area is being monitored additionally.
Hurricane Dorian's destruction in the Bahamas was very severe and sad. Click here to view the CNN article with photos of its destruction. Thousands and thousands are displaced from their homes. CNN reported about 45 people dead and so many are injured. Hundreds of people are missing. The after math is so sad.

Remember that time almost 10 years ago when Rhode Island was literally under water? The floods of 2010 happened in March and early April, covering all of Warwick and Rhode Island. The Warwick Mall was submerged in 2 feet of water. Interstate 95 in Cranston was blocked off as well as the airport connecting routes, so this caused major issues for Rhode Islanders especially those on the road. So many businesses suffered. "Super-storm" Sandy
This Super-storm took the east coast by surprise, being more devastating than anyone expected. It started as a Depression off the coast of Nicaragua on October 22 of 2012, then days later it swept over Jamaica and Haiti. Sandy continued North, going down to a tropical depression once again but then picking back up to a whopping Category 1 Hurricane. Scientists thought this was unusual, but our weather in Rhode Island has a way of being like that. Because of a cold front sweeping across the Atlantic, Sandy became a hybrid, which caused the media to label it “Frankenstorm”. Because Sandy was unusual and did not fit into a certain category, scientists and media called it a Super-storm.
The reason Sandy was so detrimental isn’t the severity of the hurricane itself, but other factors mixed in (like the cold front) and the fact that people were not prepared. Many Rhode Islanders chose not to evacuate. Sandy was the 4th most expensive storm in history, costing Rhode Island about $11.2 million in damages.
The overarching lesson here is to have flood insurance for your business. For example, many New York-based businesses were destroyed because New Yorkers assumed a storm like Sandy would never reach them far North - they were wrong. Hurricane Gloria of 1985 - "Doc! Doc! We need to get back to 1985!" This quote is not something residents would have said during this September hurricane that even killed a Scituate man (cause was a falling tree).
Hurricane Bob of 1991- This August hurricane hit Narragansett hard in the early 1990's. There were a few deaths and by today's standards, there was about $3 million in damages to The State of Rhode Island & Providence Plantations.
Hurricane "Super-storm" Sandy of 2012 - This led to many days off of school for Rhode Islanders and agony due to loss of power. This storm put our WiFi patience to the ultimate test. This storm costed Rhode Island about $11 million in damages. Yikes.

What Are Ice Dams?

What Causes Ice Dams?
Ice dams are usually caused by heavy snowfall and improper ventilation in the attic. When the roofing system isn’t working right, indoor heat can rise through the ceiling into the attic and warm the roof surface. Snow on the heated part of the roof melts and flows down until it meets the part of the roof that is below freezing. At that point, the water freezes again. This process of thawing and refreezing is what causes an ice dam.
