When water damage hits your home or business, don’t wait to get it fixed. Even just a small water damage can lead to a larger one in the future. It is best to call right away to get it fixed, to ensure the damage won’t create more problems.
If you decide to wait, water damage can cause you issues for more than over a week. These problems include damage to the walls, floors, upholstery, and other belongings. Sooner or later the walls will swell metal surfaces tarnish and furniture will begin to warp.
Enough water damage will create moisture in the air, a perfect hotspot for mold to start developing and later growing and spreading around the place.

Why SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island??
12/27/2019 (Permalink)
When water runs a muck in your home, it sure can cause a lot more damage than it looks on the surface. Without tools to detect the path of the water and hidden water, damage can go unnoticed. Our crews are highly trained to use the correct tools and use all of the equipment to properly get the job done, and prevent any further damage.
Our techs are trained to trace water that lingers behind walls, counter tops etc. They are trained to solve the problems before they can get any worse.
At SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island, one tool that we use to determine if the water is completely gone and the area is dry are moisture meters. The meters will show the levels of water that is absorbed in materials such as drywall, wood, and more. Using these tools will help our techs determine an effective drying plan for the affected areas. The moisture meters will be used every day until the process is complete, and they read optimal levels.
The state of the art equipment and training that our techs use are just two answers to: why SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island?? Call us at (401) 949-9955 if your Northern RI home suffers from a water damage.

Keeping elder family members safe during storms - Greenville
11/14/2019 (Permalink)
Make sure your elders have all the supplies they will need in case of an emergency.
Not everyone can be there 24/7 like SERVPRO, but consider your elderly parents, aunts, uncles, or neighbors. They’re just as scared as anyone is during a storm, maybe even worse. That's why it's a good idea to have a plan for them just in case you can't be there.
Keeping seniors safe during a storm:
- Have a strategy1 and make a plan.
- Make sure the person(s) is aware and understands the plan.
- Keep emergency supplies accessible.
- Water bottles
- Canned goods
- Can opener
- Matches or lighter
- Candles
- A supply of canned goods or non perishable items is necessary when preparing for an emergency. This way, they will not go bad.
- Prepare a kit with:
- Phone numbers
- Flashlight w/ extra batteries
- Important papers
- First aid kit
- If the senior is on daily medication, be sure there is enough for at least 4 days in the emergency kit.
- Appoint someone to check up on the senior(s)
- Put someone in charge of checking in on the person(s) in case of a storm or emergency.
- Make phone calls and home visits
- If they have a cell phone, make sure it is fully charged (if we are aware of an incoming storm), and that they understand how to use it.
- Program their phone with important phone numbers
SNOW STORMS:
If we are expecting a snow storm, here are some things to keep in mind when thinking about our elderly family members and friends.
- Refill prescriptions and have extras in case you/ they can’t get out in the snow.
- Prepare for power outages, again, making sure phones and other electronic devices are fully charged.
- If your family member uses oxygen or other medical devices requiring electricity, be sure they or someone has a generator they can use for the time being without power.
- Keep spare blankets and warm clothes in an easily accessible area.
Outdoors:
- Keep cars at least half a tank of gas, and check the tires for air!
- Clean debris out of gutters and spouts to allow water to properly drain.
- Arrange cars and driveways to allow for proper plowing.
Do not wait until the minute the storm hits to prepare yourself and elders!
Take these tips into consideration this winter. Call us at (401) 949-9955 or see our website if there is any damage to your home after a snow or rain storm! Cleaning + Disinfection - Why SERVPRO?
Image made with Canva Photo Editor
There has been a 2019 outbreak of Measles in many U.S. states. SERVPRO of the Northern Rhode Island is known as a leading emergency disaster restoration company, but we also specialize in carpet cleaning, air-duct cleaning and disinfecting. So far, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated there were about 839 measles reported cases so far in the United States. According to the CDC, the number of cases is increasing at an accelerating rate.
Now remember, the first signs of the Measles are:
- high fever, cough, runny nose, & conjunctivitis.
Never fear, though, because SERVPRO® of Northern Rhode Island is here to help you before more measles spread! Rhode Island is the smallest state, so like gossip, measles spreads very quickly. Call SERVPRO® of Northern Rhode Island at 401-949-9955 to disinfect your residence or commercial property in your North Smithfield, Cumberland, Woonsocket, Burrillville, or Central Falls community. No one should get the measles, and our dedicated technicians know how to clean, disinfect, and deodorize your area without damaging your furniture, fabrics, upholstery and other important pieces of property.
Reminder to wash/sanitize your hands regularly, especially after using public restrooms, water fountains, and touching doorknobs. This greatly decreases the spread of bacteria and viruses.

What is HVAC?
3/25/2019 (Permalink)
Heating
Ventilation
Air Conditioning
An acronym, HVAC refers to the different systems and technologies used in enclosed settings such as homes, offices, and transportation systems. Here at SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island, our professionals make it a priority to routinely inspect these units, to ensure they are working correctly and do not have any defects.
What are the perks of inspecting?
Keeping these units clean can extend the life of the equipment, as well as create a safer and cleaner environment. Servicing can also:
- Restore peak energy efficiency
- Help to eliminate offensive odors
- Help reduce the potential for mold growth
Although the benefits are clear, duct cleaning is not always necessary. At SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island, we may instead, make recommendations about the best way to address air quality concerns. This can, in turn, save you money and provide you with a more positive mind state regarding the area.
If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to give us a call at (401) 949-9955 or visit our website.

Examples of materials that would require demolition and the reason:
Drywall: Drywall would require removal because wet insulation is present; it was affected by water for a long period of time; it was affected by certain categories of water; it has visible "mold" growth; or it is fire damaged or burnt.
Insulation: Insulation would require removal because it is non-slvageable when affected by any type of water, mold, or fire loss.
Tile: Tile would require removal because it acts as a vapor barrier covering wood sub-floors, drywall, and framing. Tile would have to be removed in order to clean and dry the wood sub-floor or framing when affected by water, mold or fire - depending on circumstances and category of loss.
Vinyl: No matter what type of sub-floor, the vinyl would have to be removed. Vinyl acts like a vapor barrier and delaminates when affected by any type of water. Vinyl would have to be removed in order to clean and dry the wood sub-floor when affected by water, mold, or fire - depending on circumstances and category of loss.

Tips on Cooking-up a Safe Holiday Season!
11/19/2018 (Permalink)
Esmond, RI November 19, 2018 -- Holiday party planning begins now for many families, and Don McKendall of SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island offers some important reminders to Esmond residents to help ensure this season glows with the warmth of good food and good friends, and not with the glare of a devastating home fire.
“The holiday season is a time when many families plan big and elaborate meals for large groups of people,” says McKendall. “But all that cooking creates an extraordinary risk of fire. For a safe and festive holiday season, it’s important to understand that risk and take steps to minimize it.”
Cooking Fire Safety
Research from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reveals that in 2017, on average, U.S. fire departments responded to a home fire every 88 seconds.1 Cooking equipment was the leading cause2 of home fires and fire injuries, causing 47 percent of home fires. These fires resulted in 20 percent of the home fire deaths and 45 percent of the injuries.
“Esmond families should keep these statistics in mind as the holidays approach. According to the NFPA, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and Christmas Eve2,” says McKendall. “Families should also be aware that frying poses the greatest risk of fire, in fact, the NFPA discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil.3 This video graphically illustrates the danger these devices can pose.” https://youtu.be/j3rF8F0JQRQ.
McKendall offers these additional cooking safety tips from FEMA’s U.S. Fire Administration.4
- Keep an eye on what you fry: If you see any smoke or the oil starts to boil, turn the burner off.
- Stand by your pan: If you leave the kitchen, turn the burner off.
- Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so that no one can bump them or pull them over.
- Wear short sleeves or pull sleeves up: 18 percent of cooking fire fatalities in 2016 were caused by ignited clothing.2
- Keep a pot lid or cookie sheet nearby to cover a pan if it catches on fire.
“Taking common sense precautions like these and keeping kids and pets out of the kitchen during meal prep can help keep your holiday celebrations safe,” says McKendall. “The precautions you take could help prevent a devastating home fire, a tragic injury, or even the loss of life. While SERVPRO disaster response professionals are fire damage restoration specialists, they know how important it is to keep the focus on fire prevention, because for some types of loss, there is no remediation.”

September is National Preparedness Month

(Esmond, RI) September 6, 2018 - Local disaster restoration specialist Don McKendall, owner of SERVPRO® of Northern Rhode Island, reminds Rhode Island property owners that September is National Preparedness Month. This annual event, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides families and businesses with the information and resources they need to plan for, react to, survive, and recover from an emergency, before the emergency happens. (https://www.ready.gov/september)
For National Preparedness Month 2018, themed “Disasters happen, prepare now, learn how,” FEMA has prepared a week-by-week calendar of recommended actions property owners can take to be ready if disaster does strike:
Week 1. Create an emergency plan that includes signing up for emergency alerts and making contingency plans for shelter, evacuation, and family communication.
Week 2. Learn life-saving skills. CPR is a good place to start, but also be certain you know how to turn off the utilities in your home and ensure your smoke and CO detectors are properly installed and working.
Week 3. Check your insurance coverage. Once the emergency is over, appropriate and sufficient insurance will be key to getting your life back to normal, or at least on track.
Week 4. Plan financially for the possibility of a disaster. This goes beyond having a “rainy day fund” for immediate needs. Gather and organize important home, business, insurance, financial, and personal documents and keep them up-to-date and stored in a secure, water-and-fire proof location.
“There’s a difference between surviving a disaster and recovering from a disaster,” says McKendall. “Families and businesses who take the time to create both a short- and long-term plan to deal with the unexpected are better able to respond quickly if the unexpected happens, which can improve their chances of survival. Having key information at their fingertips in the aftermath of the emergency can set them on the path to recovery more quickly and with less stress.”
Because SERVPRO recognizes a fast response is critical in any emergency, McKendall reminds Esmond-area commercial and residential property owners they can download the SERVPRO READY app for free at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp. The app allows users to store essential contact and property information electronically, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds, right from the scene, if disaster strikes. For local business owners who designate SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider, SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of their facility, help the owner complete a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP), and store that profile in the READY app.
“SERVPRO disaster cleanup and restoration specialists are ready to respond to emergencies big and small,” said McKendall. “From SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Team, a group of elite large-loss specialists, pre-qualified and strategically positioned throughout the United States to handle any size disaster, to local SERVPRO professionals like SERVPRO of Northern Rhode Island, we specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping make it ‘Like it never even happened’ for both commercial and residential customers.”
